Definitions of Terminology
(Some definitions used from http://www.whatis.com)

  • CGI Script - (Common Gateway Interface) The common gateway interface is a standard way for a Web server to pass a Web user's request to an application program and to receive data back to forward to the user. A method or convention for passing data back and forth between the server and the application.

  • HTML - (HyperText Markup Language) The language of webpages on the internet.  A combination of simple opening & closing tags that affect the text enclosed within those tags.

  • HTTP - (HyperText Transfer Protocol) It is the protocol used to transport all the files used in most web pages (HTML, Java/Java Applets, CGI). It is transparent to users & does not need to be entered prior to ALL URLs.

  • Java - Java is a programming language expressly designed for use in the distributed environment of the Internet. It was designed to have the "look and feel" of the C++ language, but it is simpler to use than C++ and enforces a completely object-oriented view of programming. Java can be used to create complete applications that may run on a single computer or be distributed among servers and clients in a network. It can also be used to build small application modules or applets for use as part of a Web page. Applets make it possible for a Web page user to interact with the page.

  • Java Applet - An applet is a little application program. Prior to the World Wide Web, the built-in writing and drawing programs that came with Windows were sometimes called "applets." On the Web, using Java, the object-oriented programming language, an applet is a small program that can be sent along with a Web page to a user. Java applets can perform interactive animations, immediate calculations, or other simple tasks without having to send a user request back to the server.

  • Java Script - JavaScript is an interpreted programming or script language from Netscape. It is somewhat similar in capability to Microsoft's Visual Basic, Sun's Tcl, the UNIX-derived Perl, and IBM's REXX. In general, script languages are easier and faster to code in than the more structured and compiled languages such as C and C++ and are ideal for programs of limited capability or that can reuse and tie together existing compiled programs.

Example: The date on the bottom of the page (Page Last Updated) & all pages here change each time I save the file.  I do not manually type in the date each time I edit a page.  Handy because just saving the file changes the date displayed!

  • Urgency for design - If you need a site in a hurry, we will do our best to accomodate your needs. This option will have a charge for emergency status. If you submit a quote for urgent page design, we will focus solely on your site. If you submit an urgent request for page design while we are already to attending to another client's urgent request, then we will have to decline to work on that site until we have completed that work.  This service will also require that you offer some payment up front to ensure that you follow through with the request.
